Australian Government Immigration Program – Employer-Sponsored Visa for Australia


The Australian government made a series of changes to the regulations governing the Australian government’s immigration program. The purpose of the change was for the old rules to attract more cooks and hairdressers to the country instead of engineers and doctors.

The Australian Immigration Authority wanted to change this to CSL (Critical Skills List) and replaced it with a new SOL (Skilled Occupations List). The new SOL came into effect on July 1, 2010, and would be used to screen all Australian public relations inquiries.

The new SOL, which makes migration to Australia more stringent, is based on the ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) classification system, which replaced the old ASCO (Australian Standard Classification of Occupations). ANZSCO takes into account the current needs of the Australian labor market.

For Singaporeans who wish to travel to Australia, some of the new procedures will affect their application to migrate to Australia.

-> The bonus points eligible under the old MODL will no longer be taken into account in the Australian visa application.

-> Fluency in English will become more critical in the Australian visa application process

-> Migration to Australia will be more difficult for specific skill sets as there will be a limit on the number of immigrants in specific jobs. These specifically include visas for Australia made before September 2007.

-> The visa for Australia will be easier to obtain for applicants with vacancies than for applicants with only good grades or those who are students.

Under the Regional Sponsored Migration Program, areas with low population growth in Australia can sponsor foreign nationals for the Australian public relations application.

3. Appointment by state or territory:

These appointments include more job categories than in SOL. Those who are eligible for a state or territory appointment can submit their Australian immigration application under this program.
